Scorsese on what he was like in high school: "My parents didn't get me. They thought I was this crazy filmmaker. I had this little black-and-white ten-millimeter camera. I made this ten-minute comedy thing. It wasn't much, but I guess it wasn't half bad because I won a $500 scholarship to go to NYU. I mean, I always knew I wanted to film. Explaining that to my parents was another thing. Would you show your director friends that first film? What, ha, are you kidding? They'd laugh. But I guess that's okay; it was a comedy."scorsese

Scorsese on his style of filmmaking: If I continue to make films about New York, they will probably be set in the past. The 'new' New York I don't know much about. It's not that I'm against contemporary film. I'm open to it in general, but I find the new colours of the city, the new Times Square, kind of shocking. I guess I'm stuck in a time warp.

Someone challenged Scorsese with "Is there any movie that you wouldn't preserve? How about 'Shakes the Clown'?" Scorsese turned on his cynical questioner. "I like Shakes the Clown. Haven't you heard? It's the Citizen Kane of Alcoholic Clown Movies!"

Scorsese on The Aviator: This whole idea of “The Aviator” itself, the word ‘aviator’ isn’t a word used any more. There’s no such thing as the romantic aviator now, the scarf blowing in the wind. Now I guess it would be astronauts, right? I mean, he would be up there now, maybe spinning around, probably on Mars. He’d be there. These guys, they had guts. I’m terrified of flying.

Scorsese on growing older: "I'm in a different chapter of my life. As time goes by and I grow older, I find that I need to just be quiet and think. There have been periods when I've locked myself away for days, but now it's different - I'm married and we have a daughter who is in my office the whole time."

"There is no such thing as pointless violence. 'City of God' [Cidade de Deus (2002)], is that pointless violence? It's reality, it's real life, it has to do with the human condition. Being involved in Christianity and Catholicism when I was very young, you have that innocence, the teachings of Christ. Deep down you want to think that people are really good - but the reality outweighs that."

Scorsese uses the song "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones three times (so far!) in Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995) and The Departed (2006).

Scorsese on Humor: "I was very close to my mother," he said. "She was one of seven children and all her family had a sense of humor. I find that the humor in my films is from that side of the family, from my mother's side whose name was Capa."

Thelma Schoonmaker trivia: She once wanted a job in the U.S. State Department, but blew her chances by voicing anti-apartheid views.

Scorsese on Leo DiCaprio: "I never fail to be amazed by his clear and complete commitment to his work.".

Scorsese on s script: "The most important (thing) is the script and in the script I expect the character and the story. I am much more interested by the character than by the plot. ... There is no plot in 'Taxi Driver', not in 'The Last Temptation of Christ' and in 'Gangs of New York' there is not a lot of plot."

Jeff Bridges was so desperate to land a part in 'The Last Temptation of Christ' that he wrote a letter to Scorsese. He says it was the only time he'd ever put pen to paper to request a film part. "It was one of my favorite books and I wanted to play Judas. I sent him a wonderful book too, called 'The Saviors Of God', which was the writer's (Nikos Kazantzakis) last book. I didn't get the part but I enjoyed the movie." The part of Judas in the 1988 film went to Harvey Keitel.
