18 Dec 06 Matt Damon Says Scorsese Deserves Oscar

Matt Damon is urging Oscar voters to get it right and give director Martin Scorsese his first Academy Award or risk turning the big show into a farce.

Damon, who worked with Scorsese on The Departed, is so determined to help Scorsese pick up an Oscar he's campaigning for him over Robert De Niro, who directed Damon in new film The Good Shepherd.

He says, "Marty's such a great, great director. He really wants it (Oscar) and he hasn't made that a secret. He's been upfront about saying it would really mean a lot to him.

"He never felt that Hollywood had validated his work because his work is centerd around the east coast and New York and that somehow threatened the establishment or something. But it demeans the Oscars more than it demeans Marty that he doesn't have one, to be honest with you. Once he receives his (Oscar), then everyone who has one, their award is validated."

14 Dec 06 LA Times Slammed For Rehashed Scorsese Interview

It sounds like the Los Angeles Times was desperate for a Scorsese quote and when they couldn't talk to him, then recycled a couple of old quotes. The gossip column PageSix reports that the LA Times has been caught read handed using an almost 2-year-old interview with the director and passing it off as new.

From the NY Post's PageSix:

IF yesterday's "interview" with Martin Scorsese in the Los Angeles Times seemed familiar, it's because the quotes were nearly 2 years old. Reporter Paul Lieberman couldn't get "The Departed" director to talk to him. "Marty is giving no interviews. He is hard at work on the documentary about the Rolling Stones, and doesn't have time," said a pal. So, for yesterday's piece in "The Envelope" section of the paper, Lieberman recycled quotes from his interview with Scorsese that ran on Feb. 27, 2005, when "The Aviator" was nominated for Best Picture.

"It is outrageous that the L.A. Times, which likes to think it competes with the New York Times and the Washington Post, would recycle a 2-year-old interview with Marty just so it looks like they have an 'exclusive,' " said Scorsese's friend.

The director, who's been nominated five times for Best Director and never won, is said to be purposefully not campaigning this year. "He was embarrassed by all of the hoopla over 'The Aviator' and 'Gangs of New York,' " said Leslee Dart, Scorsese's rep. "I think this is at best dubious ethics." Lieberman didn't return calls.
